If you are craving food, art and awesome flavors, SuperChefs, recently opened on Bardstown Road, will not disappoint. SuperChefs found itself in the Highlands after its prior location, right off Shelbyville Road, burned down.

Chef Rock Alan said, “It was a sad moment but also a good moment because it gave us an opportunity to correct our mistakes that we didn’t realize until we had the opportunity to sit back and reflect how we could have done things better.”

The Bardstown Road location has received a lot of positive responses since its opening on July 15, 2016.

The restaurant began serving a “condensed menu that offers the most popular items,” Alan said. When I first arrived, I was greeted by a hostess and she showed me to a table. She asked whether this was my first visit, and since it was, she explained the menu and offered me a water to start.

It was a slow Thursday night, but every waiter and waitress made their way to each table to talk and tend to customer needs. We decided on ordering the Southern Egg Roll as our appetizer.

The appetizer was served on a plate made of clay, designed as a tree stump. The mere vision of oven-baked mac and cheese, house-made greens, fried chicken and sweet potato sauce rolled into an egg roll creates a very special moment. The crunch in each bite is like an egg roll but the contents were unique. The sweet potato sauce tasted like an apple butter that complimented the fried chicken. Included on top of every cut of egg roll was edible garnish. This added a sweet touch to every first bite. I was very pleased with the design and actual cut of each roll. The slices were easy to eat without worrying that pieces were going to fall out of the roll.

Next, I ordered the Riddler. Deemed by the waitress to be one of the most unique and best entrees served at dinner, it may be the first and best mashed potato meatloaf cupcake you have ever had, or ever will have.

The dish is presented in a cupcake design with meatloaf as the base where the cake would go, mashed potato as the icing and candied bacon sprinkles as, well, sprinkles.

The mashed potatoes did not need any additional salt or pepper. They were not dry or watery but were juicy and flavorful. The meatloaf was kept warm by the foil cupcake wrap and was juicy but not dripping. The candied bacon was made from thick cuts of bacon strips that were seasoned with brown sugar and additional ingredients. I was extremely pleased with the presentation.

I couldn’t help but wonder what exactly inspired such adventurous cooking. After all, a meatloaf cupcake? Who could ever think of that? Well, Alan and his staff did.

“Cooking to me is not just about making good food, it’s the creativity behind it,” Alan said.

After my dance with the Riddler, I was feeling extra villainous. So, I ordered the Ali Bomaye! Burger. This burger had scarlet red onion jam, smoked gouda cheese, sweet habanero pickles and candied bacon, and it was served with fries. The burger was fantastic, and the fries were phenomenal. We all dream of a perfectly golden, not too crunchy, not too soggy, salt-infused french fry. These french fries do exist, and I’m happy to report that they exist at SuperChefs.

I would recommend SuperChefs to anyone looking for a good meal with a chef that creates with intent and care for his customers. Rock said he wants his customers to “feel like they have become family.” His goal is for him and his staff to “make them feel like it’s their home.” That is a recipe for a successful restaurant.
