Bellarmine is getting into the holiday spirit.

While the tree in the quad has been lit since before Thanksgiving, the lighting of the University Dining Hall tree is a part of Bellarmine’s Annual Tree Lighting ceremony. The beloved event was held on Nov. 29 and drew hundreds of students, staff, alumni and their families.

The family-centered event offered activities to involve Knights of all ages. The BU choir and other members of the music department performed classic Christmas songs such as “Frosty the Snowman” and “Carol of the Bells.” Student Government Association representatives, Holly Cox and Robbie Gaines, dressed as Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus to pose for pictures with kids. The event also offered other activities such as writing letters to Santa, decorating cookies and crafts.

“My favorite part is seeing all of the colors and the ornaments,” daughter of BU alumnus Emerson McNatt said. “My favorite ornament is the striped green and red one.”

The event has been a BU tradition for 27 years. Unlike other alumni events, the tradition caters to those with children. Many alumni say that they have been attending this event for years.

“We have been coming to this event for about 13 years,” BU alumnus Margaret Spalding said. “My grandchildren really enjoy it. Every year it gets a little bit bigger and better. It is something me and my family really enjoy.”

Even though the event is aimed more to families, current BU students still say that it is an important tradition and has been an important part of their Bellarmine experience.

“My friends and I have gotten a picture with Santa every year since freshman year,” senior Sara Dechow said.

This tree lighting ceremony was the first for BU President Dr. Susan Donovan. Before the tree was officially lit, Donovan thanked those in attendance and welcomed alumni back to campus.

When it was time to light the tree, Donovan invited the children to come up to the tree and help her light it. The children and Donovan led the attendees in a countdown before hitting the button that lit up the UDH tree.

Not only is the event a tradition, but it is also a chance for current students to see the strong relationship BU has with to its alumni.

“This is what Christmas is about and Bellarmine is about,” Donovan said. “I am so glad that you came here with your families and know that you are always welcome here.”
