As college students, we need a little “pick me up” every once awhile with our busy schedules and late-night study sessions. Safai Coffee at 1707 Bardstown Road is the perfect place to get an exotic cup of joe and satisfy cravings for something sweet.

This coffee shop brews Organic Microlot-grade coffees, which are some of the most premium coffee beans on earth. With Heine Brothers’ Coffee, Highland Coffee and many others steps away on Bardstown Road, this corner shop is just a quick 15-minute walk from campus. I walk to coffee shops frequently, and Safai is one of my go-tos for creamy lattes, succulent crepes and cozy vibes from the shop atmosphere.

I walked to Safai with my friend, Sheila, a few days before spring break. The first thing I notice is the fun artwork outside on the shop walls. It sets the scene for the woodsy and whimsey theme inside.

When I open the door, I am greeted by the enticing, warm smell of coffee and pleasant conversations wafting throughout the room. The walls are decorated with local art and various plants and people are scattered sitting at high top tables, booths and at the bar.

When I ordered, I selected a specialty latte called “Black Magic,” which contains house brewed coffee, warm milk and white chocolate and blackberry flavoring. As soon as the drink hit my tongue, I felt as if my taste buds were dancing in delight of the rich flavor of the latte.

After settling in with my homework and latte, I decided to try one of the crepes. I chose the fruit fantasy crepe, which held sweet cream, seasonal fresh fruit, local preserves and a dollop of whipped cream on top. The crepes are made to order and served within minutes. Anyone craving a savory treat can try one of the crepes filled with meats, cheeses, vegetables and other hearty fillings.

Safai also sells various pastry items, smoothies, hot or cold tea and mimosas and other alcoholic beverages for those who are of age. Hot or cold beverages range from $2 to $7, depending on the size of the caffeine craving. The pastry items and crepes range from $3 to $10.

Safai is open 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays and 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays.
