Good sushi is hard to come by, especially far away from the ocean. Wild Ginger on 1700 Bardstown Road, however, is an exception.

This Asian fusion restaurant specializes in serving sushi but also serves several other traditional Asian dishes as well. While Wild Ginger isn’t the only place to find fresh sushi on Bardstown Road, but it is certainly one of the best options.

I went to Wild Ginger later on a Saturday evening. As soon as I walked in, I saw the bar area where I could watch my sushi being made. The restaurant has a very calming atmosphere. Music is played softly in the background, and the lighting is very dim.

The appetizer I ordered was the steamed edamame, which are salted, steamed soybeans.

For my main course, I ordered two different types of sushi rolls. The first was a salmon roll, which consists of smoked salmon wrapped in rice and seaweed. The second roll was a California roll. This is made with crab, avocado and cucumber, which is wrapped in seaweed and covered in rice and sesame seeds.

Wild Ginger serves a wide variety of sushi rolls. I ordered some of the more traditional rolls, but it serves much more than just the basic sushi. While the traditional rolls are always a safe choice, Wild Ginger also serves a variety of specialty rolls that aren’t found anywhere else in Louisville.

One of the specialty rolls that I personally really enjoy is called the sunset roll. This is made with crab, avocado, cucumber and cream cheese and is topped with smoked salmon and sliced lemon.

Wild Ginger also serves other traditional Asian dishes as well. One of these is Pad Thai noodles, which is served with carrots, scallions, onions and scrambled eggs tossed in tangy fish sauce and then garnished with peanuts and onions. Diners can also add chicken, steak, tofu, or shrimp for a little extra.

Wild Ginger also has opened up a second location in Norton Commons as well.

Prices for sushi rolls range from $8 to $15 per roll. Prices for entrees range from $8 to $16.

Wild Ginger is open from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday for lunch and 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. for dinner. They are open 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. and closed on Sundays.
