The official “dead of winter” season has hit as Bellarmine students work through the second month of the spring semester. Amid a flurry of Valentine’s Day activity, consider hitting up a Bardstown favorite: Taco Luchador.
Located at 938 Baxter Ave., Taco Luchador is a newly renovated, quickly expanding establishment. Since opening in 2015, the restaurant added more seats and a courtyard known as the “Taco Lounge” in October.
I strongly believe every taco should be crafted with fresh ingredients, and Taco Luchador’s contain the very best. These top-notch tacos come at a very reasonable price, as most cost between $3 and $4. The menu adheres to dietary restrictions with a highly rated vegetarian taco topped with grilled plantains and other mixed vegetables. The dessert menu keeps it classic with churros and flan, which both cost $4.25.
The staff is friendly and keenly willing to supply any newcomer with its top taco suggestions. My favorite is the fish taco, which I ordered with a side of chips and queso. Taco Luchador’s queso is some of the best I’ve ever had, both in flavor and texture.
Despite the restaurant’s recent growth, the atmosphere is still quaint and uniquely homey. There is plenty of space to convene with friends in the new booths in the back of the restaurant. The décor is impeccable given the casual nature Taco Luchador promotes. I was impressed with the lighting that made the rainy evening feel cheerful and lively.
There is something charming about a growing restaurant franchise that sticks to classic Mexican cuisine while adding its own unique flair. Taco Luchador is a perfect example of a restaurant doing just that. Check it out if you’re looking for a budget-friendly treat to spice up any winter day.
Taco Luchador is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Saturday from noon to 9:30 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 8 p.m.
